What is Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH)?
AMH is produced by the cells inside the follicles of a woman’s ovaries. The level of AMH is an indicator of the number of eggs you have, or your ovarian reserve. Higher AMH levels suggest a greater egg reserve, whereas lower levels indicate a reduced number of eggs.
What is an AMH test?
An AMH test measures the amount of anti-mullerian hormone present in your blood. It is commonly used by healthcare providers as one measure in assessing a woman’s reproductive health.
What can an AMH Test reveal?
An AMH test gives an estimate of how many eggs you have left, offering insight into the health of your ovaries and your fertility potential. It can also indicate how well you might respond to injectable fertility medications used to stimulate multiple egg production for in vitro fertilization (IVF). Additionally, it can suggest conditions associated with high AMH levels, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or certain ovarian cancers.
What can’t an AMH test reveal?
An AMH test does not provide information about the quality of your eggs or whether you will be able to conceive. Your fertility is also influenced by factors like age, health conditions, lifestyle, and other variables beyond AMH level.
How can I get an AMH test?
You can have one done at your OB/GYN’s office or at AFCC. At AFCC, we include AMH testing as part of our initial diagnostic testing, when appropriate.
Do I need to prepare for an AMH test?
No preparation is required for an AMH test.
What do my AMH test results mean?
The interpretation of your AMH results depends on why the test was conducted.
- If you’re healthy and trying to conceive, ask your fertility specialist to interpret the results in the context of your age and other factors. In general, higher AMH levels indicate a greater number of eggs, while lower levels suggest a lower egg reserve.
- If you were tested for PCOS, elevated AMH levels could support the diagnosis but other criteria must be met first.
