Fertility Treatment Costs

The cost for fertility treatments and fertility drugs are a significant concern for many couples struggling with infertility. Infertility and IVF insurance coverage is not common and a lot of variation is seen in what is covered and what is left for the patient to pay. The average cost of in vitro fertilization in the U.S. is currently about $11,000 to $12,000. General infertility treatments such as ovarian stimulation plus intrauterine insemination, IUI are significantly less expensive than in vitro fertilization. However they are also significantly less effective. Costs for fertility testing and treatment can vary significantly between different clinics. This will be somewhat dependent on the level of competition between fertility clinics in an area. Costs are also influenced by infertility treatment mandates for health insurance plans in some states.

Beware of Low Cost IVF Clinics

Low cost IVF clinics or “cheap IVF” clinics will sometimes be attractive to patients in a self pay situation. However the cheapest IVF is not always the best option.
  • The goal is not to do IVF, it is to have a baby.
  • If a clinic charges only $6000 for IVF, that is certainly a lower than average price.
  • However, if their success rates are low and it takes more cycles to have a baby – there may not be any cost savings.
  • One successful IVF cycle for $10,000 is better than 2 cycles for $6000 each (plus medications) to have a success.
Consumers of infertility and IVF services should consider doing research on the costs for in vitro fertilization and the live birth success rates at any clinic that they are considering.
